Quick selection
- ✓ Fence or short campaign: standard PVC
- ✓ Longer and repeated use: coated PVC
- ✓ Two-sided print or backlighting: blockout
- ✓ Large windy surface: mesh
- ✓ Trade show or interior: textile
Start with the installation site
The same artwork may require a different material depending on where it will be installed. A small banner on a sheltered fence works under different loads than a large print fixed to scaffolding.
For very large and exposed surfaces, mesh is often the safer choice because its perforated structure allows part of the air to pass through. Indoors, textile material can provide a lighter, less technical appearance than PVC.
Standard and coated PVC banners
Standard frontlit PVC is the economical all-round option for promotions, events, fences and temporary signs. It is usually the correct starting point when no special feature is required.
Choose coated PVC when the banner will be used for longer, rolled and transported repeatedly or installed several times. Its construction offers better handling durability than an entry-level laminated material.
When blockout is necessary
Blockout contains an opaque layer that reduces light transmission and prevents graphics from the reverse side showing through. It is intended for two-sided banners, displays placed near windows and installations where a clean image is required on both sides.
There is no reason to pay for blockout when a normal one-sided banner is mounted against an opaque wall or fence.
Mesh for large and windy locations
Mesh has small perforations across its surface. From close range they are visible, but on large graphics viewed from a distance the image remains readable.
The main advantage is reduced wind resistance. Correct structural assessment and sufficient fixing points are still essential; mesh does not compensate for an unsuitable support.
Finishing and artwork
PVC banners are commonly hemmed or reinforced and fitted with eyelets. Their spacing should match the banner size and wind exposure. Pole pockets are used when a tube or bar passes through an edge.
Keep logos, phone numbers and important text away from finishing areas. Prepare the artwork at the correct proportions, use CMYK and submit a print-ready PDF.
Common selection mistakes
- • Choosing only by price instead of expected use
- • Using solid PVC for a very large wind-exposed surface
- • Too few fixing points
- • Important text placed under eyelets or hems
- • Using textile material for permanent outdoor exposure
FAQ — choosing a banner
Which banner is best for a fence?
A standard PVC banner is sufficient for most normal fence installations. Consider mesh for very large or highly exposed areas.
What is the difference between standard and coated PVC?
Standard PVC is economical; coated PVC is intended for more demanding handling, longer use and repeated installation.
When should I use blockout?
Use it for two-sided printing or whenever light and graphics from the reverse side must not show through.
Is mesh print quality lower?
The perforation is visible at close range, but large-format graphics remain readable at their intended viewing distance.
